In a world where we’re always documenting, always scrolling, always sharing—it’s not surprising that more and more couples are choosing to press pause on all of it.
They’re choosing to ask their guests to put their phones away, to be fully present, to witness the ceremony—not through a screen, but through their own eyes and hearts.
This is what an unplugged ceremony really means.
It’s not about being trendy or strict or taking anyone’s joy away. It’s about making space for more.
What Is an Unplugged Ceremony?
An unplugged ceremony is when guests are asked to put away their phones, cameras, and other devices so they can be fully present. No photos, no videos—just real connection.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how different a ceremony feels when guests are watching with their eyes and not through a screen. You can feel the stillness, the emotion, the presence. And that presence is powerful.
Why Couples Are Choosing to Go Unplugged
This isn’t about being strict. It’s about preserving what matters most. Couples are choosing unplugged ceremonies for a few reasons:
Undistracted moments. When your guests are off their phones, they’re with you. They laugh with you, cry with you, and remember it with you.
More meaningful photos. No phones in the aisle means your photographer has a clear view to capture your reactions—and the ones on your guests’ faces too.
Less pressure. You won’t need to worry about unflattering angles, surprise livestreams, or blurry iPhone shots hitting social media before you’re ready.
How to Let Your Guests Know
A beautifully worded sign at the entrance or a note in your program can go a long way. You can say something like:
“We invite you to be fully present with us during our ceremony. Please turn off your devices and enjoy this moment with your hearts, not your screens.”
You’ve spent so much time planning this day. The details, the vows, the music, the people. Choosing to go unplugged for the ceremony is just one way to make sure it’s remembered the way it felt, not just the way it looked.
